Symptoms of Sleep Apnoea are:

  • Daytime sleepiness.
  • Loud snoring.
  • Observed episodes of stopped breathing during sleep.
  • Waking during the night and gasping or choking.
  • Awakening in the morning with a dry mouth or sore throat.
  • Morning headaches.
  • Trouble focusing during the day.
  • Mood changes
  • High blood pressure.
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Falling asleep whilst driving

Sleep Apnoea may be present in up to 40% of obese people.

The factors which contribute to obesity worsening Sleep Apnoea:

  • Increased fat around the neck and throat leading to partial collapse of the airway
  • Fat around the middle which inhibits breathing
  • Inflammation caused by fat deposits which soften respiratory tissues
  • Reduced lung function
  • Insulin resistance which affects the respiratory control centre in the brain
